The ideal type of laissez‐faire markets only exists in textbooks. In reality, markets as coordination mechanisms are always relative. China’s ‘emerging land markets’ should be understood in the context of economic reforms which phase in market elements gradually and incrementally, and phase out planning factors in the same manner. In academic debates, it is constructive criticism that promotes the progress of knowledge. It is the solid alternative that opens people’s minds.
